Update from Italy...
On November 13, after receiving more than 100K signatures, Mayor Zaccaria posted on his Facebook page a message to the community that steps are being taken to alleviate the issues with the shelter and the sequester. He announced that a small "sanitario" (clinic) will be constructed with 12 kennels to treat and sterilize stray and abandoned dogs. Currently, there is no place for these animals to go, so this is a step in the right direction. In his announcement, the mayor also reiterated that the government is working toward the creation of a new facility that will allow proper treatment of animals and facilitate their adoption. No specific mention was made in terms of timing of lifting the sequester. Also there will be an updated small treatment facility created in the old building at the shelter to treat the current shelter dogs. The government has purchased a new container for housing food and supplies for the animals currently in the shelter. It is a waterproof and secure container so that the food will be sheltered from the elements and from rodent infestation. Again, a good step. While the full goal has not been achieved, attention is being paid to the plight of the animals and the fact that the mayor is taking time to communicate this to the community after a long period of silence indicates that he realizes the importance of this issue.
